Criticism – Help or Hurt?
A critical disposition plagues myriads of people every day. It is easy to exalt one’s self – while proudly “picking” at others crippling and destroying their enthusiasm and productivity for God. Before expressing criticism of others, be sure to:
(1) Pause and be sure that the heart is right. Ask “will my comments help or hinder?” (Matthew 7: 1-2; Ephesians 4:29).
(2) Examine self to confirm that everything is in order. Ask, “is it honest and fair to criticize another when corrections are personally needed?” (Matthew 7:3-5).
(3) Put self in the other person’s place. Ask “How would I be doing if I were bearing his/her burdens or laboring in his/her place?” (Romans 15:1-2).
(4) Remember God’s mercy towards all men. Ask, “How often have I failed and bowed before God to plead for grace and mercy?” (Matthew 18:2135; 6:12-15). Today resolve to diligently strive to follow the admonition of James who said, “Be slow to speak” (James 1:19).
