God Is Greater Than Our Worry

As people we have many different character traits and feelings. Some of these are good and some are bad. We feel love, joy, sadness, sorrow, etc. One feeling that overcomes us much more than it should is worry. We all worry to a certain extent and no matter how much we try not to our human nature will never allow us to fully remove all worry. We may worry about our families, jobs, finances or any other number of things. I am not here to tell you that worrying is wrong, but I do believe that we need to be concerned if we are worrying all the time. As Christians we should have very little worry in our lives because we should have a full trust and assurance in God. He is there for us in all things and our worry should be solved through faith and prayer.

In Jesus’ sermon on the mount in Matthew six He talks to us about how we should handle worry. In Matthew 6:25-34 it says, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” (Another account of this can be read in Luke 12:22-29)

As Christians we should not be filled with worry, but with peace. When we worry we doubt God. We are like Peter, in Matthew 14:30-31, when he was walking to Christ on the water. When the winds picked up he got worried and doubted. Christ answered him in verse 31 saying, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” What do we have to fear? Why should we worry? If we are seeking God’s righteousness above all things then He will take care of us. No matter how strong the winds of life may be we have a God that is greater than all else. How peaceful! May God bless you this week and may you always remember that God is Greater!
