God’s Looking Glass

“For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:  for he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was” (James 1:23).

When it comes to one’s spiritual life no mirror other than God’s is sufficient for use.  God’s looking glass is unique.  It is unequaled in that:

1.  It is Personal. Possibly the most difficult thing is for us to take personal inventory.  On the other hand one of the easiest things is to see the faults and deficiencies of others.  This was one of the major problems with the Pharisees.  They could see the weaknesses of others, but failed to see the hypocrisy in themselves.  (Matthew 12:9-14; 15:1-9; Luke 11:39-44; 6:41).

When we look into God’s mirror we do not see everyone else, but ourselves.  We are instructed to examine ourselves whether we be in the faith (II Corinthians 12:5).

2. It is Penetrating. God’s looking glass does not reflect what is on the outside, but what is on the inside.  We can appear to be righteous, but what is on the inside?  We can appear to be righteous, but on the inside be filled with extortion and wickedness (Luke 11:39).  Heaven’s mirror of reflection conceals nothing and reveals all.  It enables us to see ourselves as we actually are.  We are able to see ourselves from God’s vantage point.

“The word of God (God’s mirror) is quick, and powerful and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

3. It is Perpetual. This personal and penetrating look into God’s mirror of inventory is not a quick glance approach, but a careful and continuous evaluation of oneself.  By daily study we are able to discover and eliminate the things contrary to the will of our Father, and replace them with wholesome things that becometh the gospel of Christ (Philippians 1:27; Colossians 3:1-17).

We are to let the beauty of Jesus be seen in us.  His beauty can be radiated from us as we look into God’s looking glass, personally penetratingly, and perpetually.  May the Lord of glory help us to look sincerely and to see clearly.
